Background

The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) has a 25-year track record of improving care for people with serious illness by accelerating growth in access to specialty palliative care, and by training clinicians from all specialties and disciplines in core palliative care skills.

 

The Director of Clinical Education role is critical to CAPC’s ability to fulfill our mission, and to the health of CAPC’s membership model. Responsible for overseeing development and maintenance of CAPC’s large portfolio of clinical education materials, the Director will ensure highest-quality content, user-friendly virtual education, and effective nationwide dissemination. 

 

Since launching in 2015, CAPC’s online, self-study curriculum has been used by nearly 150,000 health professionals across the US to strengthen their skills providing person-centered care to patients with serious illness. In recent years, CAPC has expanded it portfolio to include online interactive clinical education games, clinical job aides, virtual workshops, and other teaching modalities. We aim to increase both the number of clinicians we train in core palliative care skills, and the depth of our engagement with these clinicians over time. 

 

This position reports directly to CAPC’s Chief Executive Officer. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

· Collaborate with CAPC’s content development council and Chief Executive Officer to continuously evolve CAPC’s clinical education strategy; develop work plans and manage staff and financial resources that are aligned with CAPC’s strategic priorities

· Manage a team including instructional designers, a continuing education manager, and content development project manager(s) to develop new education resources and periodically update existing education resources

· Sit on CAPC’s leadership group, the Enterprise Team, to participate in organizational governance and decision-making around strategic priorities, resource allocation, and culture

· Identify, contract with, and oversee the work of subject matter experts who sit on CAPC clinical education development workgroups, ensuring interprofessional input on all CAPC education materials

· Oversee CAPC consultants and contractors who contribute to the development of education materials, including illustrators and graphic designers

· Develop best practices for efficient content review, development, and storage, including the implementation of citation management and the creation of production checklists

· Review all CAPC courses and learning activities prior to launch for narrative coherence, functionality and quality assurance, and compliance with CAPC style guidelines and messaging

· Communicate challenges or unexpected developments in production process early, and work collaboratively with team members to problem-solve

· Collaborate with CAPC’s Marketing Department to develop promotional materials and messaging around new CAPC content/products; identify opportunities to publish and/or present about CAPC clinical education

· Support the creation of grant proposals and grant reports related to CAPC clinical education

· Represent CAPC Clinical Education in relevant external relationships 

· Maintain awareness of trends in online education and education technologies, to ensure that CAPC products are maximally effective and user-friendly

· Identify opportunities to accelerate usage of CAPC clinical education materials, including tools and technical assistance for clinical educators from CAPC member organizations, CAPC website functionality, targeted materials for specific clinician learner groups, and other utilization strategies

· Liaise with CAPC colleagues who lead marketing and communications, website technology, data collection and analysis, and other key internal stakeholders as needed to ensure optimized promotion, utilization, and insights from CAPC clinical education

· This position is remote; some travel will be required

 

 

Qualifications 

· Previously held leadership position; demonstrated ability to design and implement strategic initiatives

· At least five years of management experience in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects running in parallel

· Experience developing education curricula for adult learners; experience with online learning preferred but not required

· Health care background strongly preferred; grants management experience strongly preferred

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills (note: upon being invited to interview for the position, CAPC will request a writing sample)

· Demonstrated ability to perform complex project management

· Collaborative, team-oriented approach to achieving project goals

Work Requirements

· CAPC is a division of the Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As Mount Sinai Health System employees, all CAPC staff must be vaccinated for COVID-19.

· This position is open to applicants throughout the U.S. and will be performed remotely with annual travel to NY

o Must be comfortable with occasional additional travel for ad hoc meetings and/or conferences

Compensation

Full-time, exempt position; starting salary range of $115,000 to $125,000 per year.

Background

The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) is a national, non-profit membership organization that successfully uses social change principles to promote high-quality palliative care for people with serious illnesses. CAPC provides health professionals with the tools, training, and technical assistance necessary to start and sustain successful palliative care programs in hospitals and other health care settings and delivers online continuing education to clinicians of all specialties and disciplines to strengthen their care of patients living with serious illnesses.

 

The Instructional Design Program Manager is a contract position that will work closely with CAPC leadership, course authors, and other subject matter experts to develop a grant-funded online curriculum of e-learning courses focused on leadership skills development for health professionals. The grant project will run through July 2025, with the final deliverable being an online curriculum consisting of e-learning modules and other learning modalities that equip professionals to manage teams and navigate leadership challenges in the fields of palliative care and geriatrics. The Instructional Design Program Manager will work closely with curriculum authors and the grant project manager to translate content into best-in-class, interactive online learning for health professionals. This position will report directly to CAPC’s Chief Executive Officer.

· Use adult learning and e-learning best practices to create engaging online leadership training content for 

· Apply emerging instructional design trends and technologies to the development of the leadership curriculum

· Develop 15-20 online modules using Articulate Storyline

· Collaborate with subject matter experts early in development process to strategize around content design and delivery, including drafting potential interfaces and interactions

· Collaborate with course authors and subject matter experts to elicit, synthesize, and incorporate feedback on content flow and presentation

· Analyze learner feedback on CAPC educational content and recommend and/or implement needed changes determined in collaboration with Education Department leadership

· Partner with CAPC’s Continuing Education team to facilitate continuing education applications, and to ensure quality and best practice education strategy

 

Qualifications 

· Five or more years of experience in instructional design

· Demonstrated experience with Articulate Storyline 

· Prior experience collaborating with consultants and subject matter experts

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Superb project management skills and adept at managing multiple projects in parallel

· Thrives in an environment that requires flexibility and teamwork 

 

Contract Parameters

· CAPC is a division of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Care within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which is the contracting entity for CAPC consultants.

· CAPC anticipates the project will require 30h/week of instructional design time from the Spring of 2024 through July 2025 (including virtual meetings with authors and subject matter experts, and course development activities) 

· This consulting contract is completely remote; no travel is required
